The idea of Internet collaboration is nothing new. The entire dot com revolution was fueled by the idea. As the excitement died down, and the venture capitalists went home, something extraordinary took place: everyone continued to use the Internet, incredible PC power became affordable, and high-speed Internet access snuck into even our parents' houses. As musicians, we found that we could produce professional recordings with virtually unlimited tracks and effects, at home, with only a personal computer and the resolve to tame the technology. A quiet revolution had taken place (or maybe not so quiet, depending upon your musical tendencies), and today's recording musician is the beneficiary of some serious 'trickle-down' technology, powerful beyond his or her wildest dreams!
The story of RiffTrader.com is one of internet collaboration - the site itself is the result of online networking and creative interaction; it's a story we expect to hear repeated among users of the site as relationships are built and music is made without the usual limits of time, place or platform.
In Atlanta, GA, musician/web-guru Christian McCarty had an idea for a site. Better than that, a network of sites that would support file-exchange simply - a utility that musicians would find friendly, and free. The vision consumed him, he lost all perspective, left a successful Internet gig with Cox Interactive Media, and set up shop as SongPlanet.com.
Meanwhile, a world away in Seattle, WA, musician/editor Joel Veatch (Co-owner of Flying Spot Motion Media, an editorial, effects and design firm for film and video) was busily describing a web utility that would allow musicians and artists to collaborate and share unwieldy (read enormous) files in a cohesive, sensible manner. Something cool. Something that would make use of Flying Spot server technology and network bandwidth, and engage the imagination of the creative staff at the company. Something music-focused (so it would have traction in the minds of the other musicians at the shop, thus actually happen). Researching scripts and database solutions, Joel finds Christian online. They hook-up, they make a site called RiffTrader.
Funny thing though: as of the writing of this history, Christian and Joel have yet to meet in person. Search, connect and jam - the very spirit behind RiffTrader in action. An online partnership that works.
RiffTrader.com is proof-positive that the promise of the Internet can be realized for the recording musician. It is a labor of love - by musicians for musicians. Tools co-developed here at RiffTrader will be made available through the SongPlanet, Inc. web-development team, as Christian takes the concept to markets across the U.S., establishing what he hopes will be dozens of locally-sponsored riff-trading websites providing free internet exchanges between musicians everywhere. So noble it's almost evangelical, huh?
